Have you visited the Plague Village yet? In 1665 Have you visited the Plague Village yet? In 1665 plague came to Eyam and the villagers chose to isolate rather than spread it around to neighbouring villages. The village is packed with reminders of this tragedy, with signs at the cottages where the victims died, small graveyards (the Riley graves are especially sad, as Elizabeth Hancock had to bury her husband and 6 of her children who died in the space of a week, with no help) and boundary stones where food and goods were left for the villagers. We also visited Cucklet Church, which became an open air church and the meeting place for Emmott and Rowland, a young couple separated by the plague and destined never to be together again. It’s a fascinating place to visit, a tragic story and perfect for a Halloween walk! This 6.6 mile walk takes in all these sights and stories. Try this 3.5 mile Padley Gorge and Bolehill Quarry (or Bole Hill Quarry) circular from Grindleford Station. You’ll pass Padley Chapel and the ruins of Padley Manor, explore the old quarry with its millstone graveyard (snd tons of different toadstools and mushrooms) and then get all the Autumn colours in Padley Gorge. These will be at their best in mid to late October/early November. A short walk with loads to see! Here’s one a route to save for a rainy day in th Here’s one a route to save for a rainy day in the Lake District… We had a wander from Dalegarth Station along the old railway track to Gill Force and then up through a beautiful lush gorge to Stanley Ghyll. The path takes you up to a viewing platform which leans out over the gorge so you can see how far the drop is!!
