Steel Cotton Rail Trail: Hathersage to Bamford | 3.5 Miles
Running the length of the Hope Valley line, the Steel Cotton Rail Trail is designed so you can dip in and out by train – ideal if you’re looking for a relaxed day hike without the faff of driving. The stretch between Hathersage and Bamford combines village charm with heritage trails. Start with a wander through Hathersage, follow the Derwent Valley Heritage Trail through green fields and riverside meadows, and finish up at Bamford station with plenty of history along the way.
This post came about after a lovely invite from the High Peak and Hope Valley Community Rail Partnership, who asked me to help spread the word about their new walking trail. I wasn’t paid to do this – I just thought it was a great idea worth sharing.

Walk Highlights
Hathersage Village
Hathersage is a brilliant place to start a walk – there’s plenty of history here (think Robin Hood and Little John’s grave, and also the connection with Jane Eyre), but also a really lively village feel with cafés and outdoor shops if you need supplies.

Derwent Valley Heritage Trail
From Hathersage you’ll follow a section of the Derwent Valley Heritage Trail, which winds through fields and riverside paths. It’s a lovely gentle way to walk, with plenty of birdlife and big valley views to keep you entertained.
