Langsett Reservoir is in the Dark Peak part of the Peak District and is a picturesque reservoir near Barnsley and Penistone, South Yorkshire. Owned by Yorkshire Water, this reservoir is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is a great place for a family walk. The majority of the paths are accessible to most and the walk itself is almost 7km long. There is a pub and cafe along the route where you can get a drink and use the facilities if needed.

The walk starts from the free Langsett Barn car park (S36 4GY) just off the A616. Alternative parking is available at Langsett Flouch car park to the west. You need to cross the main road to access the woodland around the reservoir – it’s a busy road and the traffic is fast, so take care.

The walk winds through the woodland which feels like something out of the Gruffalo. It’s a lovely place to explore with little waterfalls here and there in and amongst the trees. It was rather muddy when we went though!

The walk goes past the remains of “North America” which looks as though it was an old farmhouse. It’s really interesting, and would have been an amazing place to live back in the day. Those views over Langsett Reservoir are amazing!

After you cross the reservoir dam you come to the spotty cafe or the pub. If the weather is as bleak as it was for us you will definitely need to pop in for a warm up! It was bitterly cold when we went to Langsett (I think it was a freezing January day) and the wind was biting as we crossed the dam!

How far is the Langsett Reservoir walk?

This walk is just over 4 miles long but you could make it shorter if you need to.

Langsett Reservoir facilities

There is car parking but no other facilities at Langsett Reservoir. On a nice day you might find somewhere to have a picnic around the reservoir.

Do you have to pay for parking at Langsett Reservoir?

It’s free to park at Langsett Reservoir. The car park can get very busy at peak times but there is further parking available at Flouch a short distance to the west.

This Langsett Reservoir circular walk is a great one to do with kids and you can have the lure of the cafe to keep them going! The terrain isn’t too challenging and I have seen people with smaller children wandering round.  It’s a lovely way to get them out in the fresh air for a couple of hours! For more child friendly walks, check out this walk to Eastergate Bridge.

ABOUT ME

Y Garn with Kids - Y Garn via the Devil's Kitchen Walk in Ogwen Valley

Hello! I’m Jo! Welcome to The Wandering Wildflower, an outdoors lifestyle blog focusing on family walks in the Peak District, a place we love exploring. I want to share the Peak District hidden gems and show you there’s so much more than the honeypot places. When I’m not dragging my husband and now 11 year old out on Peak District walks or up mountains, I can be found on planning my next moorland walk or plotting a Geocache walk (and seeing where the nearest pub is!). I love the hills but hate the heights, so trig bagging is – er- fun!

I hope this blog will give you some ideas of places to visit in the Peak District and inspire you and your family to head into the great outdoors.  Thanks for stopping by!
