Steel Cotton Rail Trail: Grindleford to Hathersage | 2.5 Miles

The Steel Cotton Rail Trail links Sheffield and Manchester via a series of station-to-station walks, making it one of the most public transport-friendly long-distance routes in the UK. Each section has its own character, and this one from Grindleford to Hathersage is all about gentle countryside and historic gems. Along the way you’ll find Padley Chapel tucked in the woods, sweeping views across to Stanage Edge, and peaceful riverside paths leading you straight into Hathersage.

This 2.5 mile stretch follows part of the riverside Derwent Valley Heritage Way and you’ll enjoy lovely countryside views.

Walk Highlights:

Padley Chapel

Tucked away in the woods near Grindleford, Padley Chapel is all that remains of the old Padley Hall. It’s a small but atmospheric place, with a story tied to the Padley Martyrs, and makes a nice little point of interest as you head out on the trail.

Views of Stanage Edge

As you wander the valley, you’ll spot the gritstone escarpment of Stanage Edge stretching along the skyline. It’s one of the Peak District’s best-known climbing spots, but from here you just get to enjoy the view without the effort of hauling yourself up it.

Riverside Walks

The route leads you gently along the River Derwent, with leafy banks and the sound of running water for company. It’s a really peaceful stretch and a great warm-up for the rest of the trail.
