Camping in Dolgellau – Dolgamedd Holiday Park
Looking for a campsite for a low-key, restful stay? Me too, always! After seeing videos of peaceful riverside camping in Wales online, I booked for us to stay a weekend at Dolgamedd Holiday Park so we could walk up Cadair Idris. Here’s a guide to this campsite in Dolgellau.

Dolgamedd Campsite Review
Dolgamedd is a simple, no-frills campsite near Dolgellau, and its biggest draw is where it sits. Right on the riverside, with pitches set along the water, it’s the kind of spot where you fall asleep to the sound of the river rather than anything else. No frills, no fuss, just a straightforward place to pitch up.
The main draw though is the location for walking. Sitting right on the doorstep of Cadair Idris, it’s about as convenient a base as you’ll find for tackling one of Wales’ most iconic mountains, meaning you can be back at your tent and cooling off by the river within an hour or so of finishing the walk.
We booked a riverside pitch and our tent opened up directly onto the river bank. The campsite also allows campfires, so we were able to take our firepit and I attempted cooking pizza over the campfire (not a success!). Our pitch came with a wooden picnic bench and table (not all do), and there is a great facilities block with toilets, showers, launderette and campers kitchen where you can charge your phone and change freezer blocks if you’re camping without EHU. Some of the riverside pitches have EHU – check before you book.
Know before you go
- Book ahead in peak season – riverside pitches are popular, especially in summer. Try not to get one with a rope swing – we had pitch 5 and it was lovely, but right next to a rope swing and we had unattended young kids walking through our pitch a lot to get to the river.
- Take your hiking gear – with Cadair Idris right on your doorstep, make sure you pack the right gear! The weather can change in no time, so pack layers and get plenty of snacks before you go.
- No frills means no frills – this is a simple, back-to-basics site, so don’t expect a shop. Stock up at the Co-op in Dolgellau before you arrive.
- Mind the riverside pitches – lovely for the setting, but keep an eye on younger campers or dogs near the water’s edge. The river is shallow and rocky, but there are deeper spots.
