How to Find Folly Dolly Falls

November 29, 2021 CIRCULAR WALKS, HOLMFIRTH WALKS, SHORT WALKS UNDER 3 MILES, YORKSHIRE WALKS

Wondering how to find Folly Dolly Falls? This hidden gem of  a waterfall is in Meltham and is a short walk from the village centre. Read on for the walking route to Folly Dolly Falls, where to park to visit Folly Dolly Falls, and more. It’s one of the waterfalls near me and a real must visit in Meltham!

Folly Dolly Falls, a waterfall in Meltham

This Folly Dolly Falls walk is a great family walk – kids will love to explore this amazing waterfall and beautiful woodland! Apparently named after someone who used to live nearby (who threw herself off the falls after being jilted by a lover), Folly Dolly Falls are about 10m high and formed from gritstone and shale.

The falls look spectacular after a period of rain but the terrain will be muddy, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear.

The waterfall is just off the Meltham greenway, a former railway line which is a great place to take the kids on bikes as it’s so flat. It’s about 1km long and runs from The Cobbles. For the most part the terrain is accessible as the greenway is surfaced, but access to the Falls involves a bit of a scramble down a muddy bank (or down some steep earth steps) and to access the bottom of the waterfall you need to use stepping stones in the stream, so take care.

Along the Meltham Greenway

If you park at Morrisons supermarket, head along the footpath into the modern housing estate along The Cobbles which is next to the river. The route of the greenway is obvious and runs through pleasant woodland for about 1km. You’ll pass a big concrete circle which used to be part of the David Brown Tractors testing track.

Next you’ll come to a wooden bridge. You’ll hear the falls before you see them! There is a gap in the railings on this bridge where the path to the waterfall passes through. Take the steps to the left, down off the bridge, taking care as you go. If you have bikes you can chain them to the fence while you explore the falls.

The muddy path splits into two. The top one takes you to a wooden viewing platform where you can see the falls. If you head down the other path you can access the bottom of the falls and access the stream.

ABOUT ME

Y Garn with Kids - Y Garn via the Devil's Kitchen Walk in Ogwen Valley

Hello! I’m Jo! Welcome to The Wandering Wildflower, an outdoors lifestyle blog focusing on family walks in the Peak District, a place we love exploring. I want to share the Peak District hidden gems and show you there’s so much more than the honeypot places. When I’m not dragging my husband and now 11 year old out on Peak District walks or up mountains, I can be found on planning my next moorland walk or plotting a Geocache walk (and seeing where the nearest pub is!). I love the hills but hate the heights, so trig bagging is – er- fun!

I hope this blog will give you some ideas of places to visit in the Peak District and inspire you and your family to head into the great outdoors.  Thanks for stopping by!
