Burbage Edge Circular Walk

April 25, 2022 CIRCULAR WALKS, MEDIUM WALKS 4-9 MILES, PEAK DISTRICT WALKS, PEAK DISTRICT WALKS WITH KIDS

This Burbage Edge walk is nice 5 mile circular walk in the Goyt Valley near Buxton. It’s a moorland walk which will take you past the Burbage Edge trig point.

The walk starts from one of the small car parks on Goyts Lane, near a small reservoir. We followed the track a short distance to a sign post, then headed down the hillside to the bottom of Wildmoorstone Brook.

Wild Moor, Goyt Valley

The climb up Wild Moor

Crossing Wildmoorstone Brook, we climbed up the steep hillside to the top of Wild Moor, then followed the path along the line of the grouse butts. We then turned south along Goyts Moss, and followed the direction of Berry Clough until we reached Burbage Edge.

We followed the dry stone wall along Burbage Edge until we reached the trig point. I’d said I was going to handstand at the next trig point we found but I totally forgot! Next time…!

Burbage Edge

It’s worth mentioning that there is meant to be the site of a Peak District plane crash on Burbage Edge, but I couldn’t find any information about its location unfortunately.

Trig point photos taken, we headed off down the steep sided moorland towards the disused railway line and railway tunnel. According to Goyt Valley.org “The Cromford & High Peak Railway – which ran through the Goyt Valley between 1831 and 1892 – was a triumph of Victorian perseverance and ingenuity. Connecting canals at Cromford and Whaley Bridge, the 33 mile line incorporated a number of steep inclines along which trains were hauled using steam-driven cables“. The tunnel is now blocked off unfortunately but it must have been some feat of engineering! We followed the course of the railway line back to the car park.

This was a lovely walk for a Sunday afternoon. As I’d had to convince Hols to come on this walk with some bribery, we headed to her favourite pub The Lantern Pike on the way back home for a lovely Sunday Lunch.

ABOUT ME

Y Garn with Kids - Y Garn via the Devil's Kitchen Walk in Ogwen Valley

Hello! I’m Jo! Welcome to The Wandering Wildflower, an outdoors lifestyle blog focusing on family walks in the Peak District, a place we love exploring. I also blog about our UK camping trips, UK day trips, walks around Yorkshire and more. When I’m not dragging my husband and 10 year old out on Peak District walks or up mountains, I can be found on my phone, planning my next Geocache walk (and seeing where the nearest pub is!). I love the hills but hate the heights, so trig bagging is – er- fun!

I hope this blog will give you some ideas of places to visit in the Peak District and inspire you and your family to head into the great outdoors. Thanks for stopping by!
