We walked a loop from the car park to the Cage, past the deer, up into Lantern Wood to the Lantern and then over to the Bowstones. We had planned to visit Sponds Hill trig but there were a load of vans there so we decided against it, returning back to the house via Knightslow Wood. The Peak District is home to loads of myths and legends, and these walks visit some of the spookiest places in the Peak District. 💀 Redmires Reservoir and the Spooky House 💀 Peters Stone and Cressbrook Dale - the site of the last public gibbet,where the bodies of criminals were displayed 💀 West Nab - thought to have been the site of sacrifices and Druid goings on 💀 Stanton Moor and the Nine Ladies - legend says nine women were turned to stone for dancing when they shouldn’t have 💀 Lost Lad - named for a shepherd boy who died on the moors 💀 Eyam Plague Trail - discover the grisly history of the plague in Eyam 💀 Mermaids Pool, Kinder Scout - home to a mermaid who will drag unlucky hikers to their deaths 💀 Errwood Hall - a ruined mansion with a graveyard on the hillside and a small chapel 💀 Cave Dale - the ghost of a knight is said to roam about near Peveril Castle 💀 Winnats Pass - the site of a double murder and a suicide 💀 B29 Superfortress crash site - 13 crewmen lost their lives when the plane hit the moors near Bleaklow 💀 Luds Church - said to be haunted by the ghost of a young girl, Alice 💀 Jane Eyre Trail - discover North Lees Hall, the inspiration for Thornfield Hall in Jane Eyre (where Mr Rochester imprisoned his first wife in the attic). Yesterdays 5 mile wander from Hayfield… We head Yesterdays 5 mile wander from Hayfield… We headed up to The Knott, a little hill with stunning views of Kinder Scout, South Head, Mount Famine and Lantern Pike. I plotted a route in the OS maps app but it didn’t pick up the path to the summit, so we had a very heathery yomp up then saw the path on our way back down! Typical. Gorgeous route coming back down past the shooting cabin and Snake Path into Hayfield again, past Twenty Trees. Tell me a better way to spend a Friday morning… Tell me a better way to spend a Friday morning… You can’t. There isn’t one. Had a lovely run around Snailsden this morning. The reservoir was so still, the reflections were amazing, the weather was perfect, I didn’t see anyone else and the bogs are back. *chefs kiss* #snailsden #snailsdenreservoir #peakdistrictnationalpark #trigpointinguk #trigbagging #63trigs #peakdistricttrigs
Have you visited the Plague Village yet? In 1665 Have you visited the Plague Village yet? In 1665 plague came to Eyam and the villagers chose to isolate rather than spread it around to neighbouring villages. The village is packed with reminders of this tragedy, with signs at the cottages where the victims died, small graveyards (the Riley graves are especially sad, as Elizabeth Hancock had to bury her husband and 6 of her children who died in the space of a week, with no help) and boundary stones where food and goods were left for the villagers. We also visited Cucklet Church, which became an open air church and the meeting place for Emmott and Rowland, a young couple separated by the plague and destined never to be together again. It’s a fascinating place to visit, a tragic story and perfect for a Halloween walk! This 6.6 mile walk takes in all these sights and stories.
