Musden Low Short Walk | 1 Mile

This Musden Low short walk is just over a mile and is a quick there and back walk to bag the Musden Low trig point and Ethel.

Musden Low trig point

Musden Low is a Peak District hill overlooking the Manifold Valley, about one mile to the south-west of Ilam. There is a trig point at the summit however this is on private land – if you have long arms you may be able to reach it over the wall though! I couldn’t as I’m only 5’5″.

We parked on Green Lane, near to the gateway where the footpath enters the field. If you park here be sure to park considerately and don’t block the road or the gate. From here it’s a super quick walk to the summit – it took us 25 minutes there and back! There is a small climb up to the top of Musden Low but other than that it’s pretty gentle going.

We did this hill as a quick walk on it’s own as it’s not really very near any other Ethels. You could tie it in with Thorpe Cloud and Tissington Hill to make a longer walk out of it if you wanted to. We almost made the mistake of leaving this one until last and having to drive here (an hour and a half each way!) specifically to finish the Ethels Challenge organised by CPRE, but we tagged it on at the end of a day when we had been on the Monyash to Magpie Mine walk and Sough Top and Chelmorton Low walk, meaning it was only a 30 minute drive to get here. Our last walk turned out to be Croker Hill, which wasn’t much nearer!
