Best Walks Near Crowden Campsite

March 1, 2022 CIRCULAR WALKS, HOLMFIRTH WALKS, MEDIUM WALKS 4-9 MILES, PEAK DISTRICT WALKS, SHORT WALKS UNDER 3 MILES

It seemed only fitting that I put together a round up of the best walks near Crowden Campsite as we seem to have done a fair few from there now. Here are some Peak District walks around Crowden you might like to try.

Crowden is a beautiful part of the Peak District, nestled in the bottom of the valley between peaks such as Black Hill and Bleaklow. Crowden Camping and Caravanning Site is based in Crowden, near Glossop between Woodhead and Torside Reservoirs, with spectacular moorland walks nearby. It’s an ideal base to explore the Dark Peak. Here are some of the best walks near Crowden Campsite to explore.

Here are some fabulous walks near Crowden campsite for you to try.

Crowden Circular Walk via Crowden Quarry – 5 Miles

This 5 mile walk takes you around the scenic moorland nearby and up to the fabulous Crowden Quarry (or Crowden Castle as it’s known locally). You’ll also pass the tiny St James’s Chapel, a tiny little church set up from the Woodhead Pass. This church is still in use, despite it’s location and desolate position. The walk starts from Crowden Camp Site and, using Open Access Moorland, explores the hillsides over Woodhead Reservoir.

Crowden to Featherbed Moss Trig Point via Laddow Rocks – 7.5 Miles

This circular walk takes you from Crowden to Featherbed Moss trig point and back, via Chew Reservoir and Laddow Rocks. It’s a challenging hike of approximately 7.5 miles or 12km and takes you through the beautiful Crowden valley, up past the stunning Laddow Rocks and onto the open moors to find the Featherbed Moss trig point. You then head to Chew Reservoir, taking in the views over Saddleworth Moor in the distance before heading back.

Crowden to White Low and Hey Edge – 5.5 Miles

This route from Crowden camp site to White Low and Hey Edge takes you over beautiful moorland. It’s just under 9km or 5.5 miles and takes in Hey Edge trig point and Crowden Quarry as well as White Low, a Peak District Ethel. The moorland can be pretty bleak and wet at certain times of the year, so make sure you’re prepared!

Crowden to Woodhead Tunnel Walk – 4 Miles

Over the other side of the valley is the remains of Crowden railway station, a former station stop on the Woodhead Railway Line from Sheffield to Manchester. This walk uses part of the Trans Pennine Trail, meaning the path is gentle and well surfaced and accessible for most people. The walk takes you from the former station site through the Woodhead Valley to the old Woodhead Tunnels and back. This is a great walk with kids, as the route alongside the Woodhead Reservoir is pretty level all the way, and is great for railway enthusiasts too.

More information about this Crowden to Woodhead Tunnels walk can be found here.

Torside Reservoir Circular – 4.5 Miles

If you are looking for an easy Peak District walk, this Torside Reservoir circular walk might be the one for you. Using part of the Trans Pennine Trail, this scenic Peak District walk is a great one to do with kids. You’ll walk around the beautiful Torside valley before heading back through woodland. At 4.5 miles it’s a lovely walk out.

ABOUT ME

Y Garn with Kids - Y Garn via the Devil's Kitchen Walk in Ogwen Valley

Hello! I’m Jo! Welcome to The Wandering Wildflower, an outdoors lifestyle blog focusing on family walks in the Peak District, a place we love exploring. I want to share the Peak District hidden gems and show you there’s so much more than the honeypot places. When I’m not dragging my husband and now 11 year old out on Peak District walks or up mountains, I can be found on planning my next moorland walk or plotting a Geocache walk (and seeing where the nearest pub is!). I love the hills but hate the heights, so trig bagging is – er- fun!

I hope this blog will give you some ideas of places to visit in the Peak District and inspire you and your family to head into the great outdoors.  Thanks for stopping by!
